The Shame Operating System
Why "Imposter Syndrome" is just a Survival Spell in a better outfit.
Most women in leadership (and humans in general) don’t like to use the word “Shame.” They call it Imposter Syndrome. They call it “high standards.” They call it “burnout.”
They use every clinical, “safe” term available to avoid the “S-word,” but the mechanics remain the same. They are running a sophisticated version of the Shame Loop (as mapped above).
When Shame is your default Operating System, your primary goal isn’t expansion - it’s protection.
The Mechanics of the Loop
The Response (Self-Attack & Avoidance): When a trigger hits- a promotion, a big stage, or a mistake, the system immediately launches a survival spell to keep you safe from exposure.
Self-Attack looks like an inner critic that convinces you that you’re a fraud before anyone else can.
Avoidance looks like hyper-agency, perfectionism, and staying “too busy” to feel the physical bracing in your body.
The Deflection (The Release Valve): When the internal pressure of the Shame OS becomes too much to contain, we look for a target to hold the weight. Bitching, gossiping, and putting others down are just sophisticated ways of deflecting our own shame onto someone else. If we can make them the problem, we don’t have to feel our own fracture.
The Result: You stay trapped in a cycle where every success only increases the fear of being “found out.” You are functionally competent but somatically locked in a loop of hiding and offloading.
Uninstalling the System
To step outside of this loop, you have to uninstall the Shame OS and totally change the mechanism.
You cannot ‘think’ your way out of the loop by reading another book on “Confidence.” You actually have to stop the Self-Attack, Avoidance, and Deflection and find the “Fourth Way” - learning to release and unwind shame from your system without dropping into a collapse.
When you can hold the feeling of exposure without needing to hide or lash out, the loop breaks. The shame dissipates. You move from the “Survival Spell” into a state of anchored power.
